Nolan's 79th minute penalty secures point for Reds

16 March 2024

Jack Nolan’s 79th minute penalty secured a point for Accrington Stanley against Notts County at the Wham Stadium.

Shaun Whalley had levelled for the Reds before County went in at the break leading 2-1 but Nolan made sure Stanley deservedly took something from the game.

The Magpies went ahead in the fourth minute as a cross from Jodi Jones found Alassana Jatta with his back to goal and he set up Jim O’Brien to fire home.

Cody Adedoyin tried his luck with an overhead kick at the other end while Jatta’s strike sailed wide in the 16th minute.

Adedoyin headed over the bar for Stanley before the Reds levelled on 17 minutes.

Jack Nolan’s ball in found the head of Adedoyin, whose effort was pushed out by Sam Slocombe. The ball fell to Whalley at the far post who blasted it into the roof of the net.

It was an open game with Magpies top scorer Macaulay Langstaff heading over while Nolan fired into the side netting for the Reds.

Langstaff had an effort blocked in the six-yard box while Aaron Nemane’s strike was well saved by Radek Vitek.

Langstaff fired a long-range effort straight at Vitek before County went ahead again on 45 minutes.

Sam Austin’s shot was kept out by the keeper’s legs but it fell to Jatta in the six-yard box to put County ahead.

Whalley had two headed chances in quick succession in the early stages of the second half but couldn’t test Slocombe.

County’s O’Brien fired straight at Vitek while a Jones fierce strike was straight over the stand.

Stanley then enjoyed a spell of pressure as they looked for an equaliser and Josh Woods had the ball in the back of the net on 67 minutes but it was ruled out for off-side.

Tommy Leigh had a header saved almost on the goalline by Slocombe while a Whalley looping header had to be caught by County keeper.

Joe Pritchard made a welcome return to action on 74 minutes before Stanley levelled on 79 minutes.

Nolan’s cross hit the arm of Kyle Cameron and referee Sunny Singh Gill pointed to the penalty spot, with Nolan rifling home his 14th goal of the campaign.

The legs of Radek denied Charlie Cockett a winner in the 88th minute.
