INTERVIEW: Coley looking forward to Cowley clash

Reds look to make it successive wins in Play-Off push

15 February 2024

John Coleman is looking forward to locking horns with Colchester United head coach Danny Cowley on Saturday.

Danny and brother Nicky took over at The Us in January and, in their five League Two games so far, they have won one, lost one and drawn three.

Colchester currently lie in 22nd place, six points above the bottom two, while 12th placed Stanley are hoping to make it two successive wins and climb closer to the top seven.

Coleman said: "The thing that endears me to Danny and Nicky is that they love football and I can buy into anyone who loves football as I love football.

"They can be quirky but they are keen, I can't knock anyone for being keen about football.

"Over the years, they have done terrific jobs where they have been, most notably Lincoln where they did an outstanding job.

"I have got to take my hat off to them, I have spoken to Danny over the last six months, and it will be good to see them. I hope they do well - just not on Saturday. They are good people."

Stanley lost to the then managerless Us 1-0 in October despite having 31 shots on goal.

"When we played them, we had so many shots, it was a frustrating day.

"You have to be prepared for that if you are involved in football. Sometimes the ball just won’t go in.

"On Tuesday, I can't remember ever playing at home, having two shots on target and scoring with both of them and them being two such good goals.

"The beauty of football is that you have another go soon after and we have our chance to have our revenge on Saturday."

While Stanley are two points off the Play-Offs on 45 points, Coleman's first job is to ensure League Two football next season for the Reds.

"My priority is to get to 50 points and then we can have a look at a tilt at the Play-Offs.

"If we get some of the long list of injuries back, I think we might have chance.

"We have to keep playing with the belief we had in the second half on Tuesday.

"I have no doubts about their efforts so you never know - there could still be a good tilt at the Play-Offs."

Joe Gubbins and Seamus Conneely came off in the 2-0 win over AFC Wimbledon but both look likely to be fit for the long trip.
