Reds secure League Two status and keep a welcome clean shee

6 April 2024

Accrington Stanley secured their League Two status and kept a welcome clean sheet with a goalless draw against Play-Off chasing Crewe.

Stanley last kept a shut-out ten games ago and the defence held firm against Crewe, who are in sixth place.

With other results, the Reds made sure they will play in League Two next season as John Doolan continues to look at his squad with a view to the next campaign.

The Reds boss made three changes from the starting XI who lost to Morecambe with scorer Lewis Shipley, midfielder Ben Woods and Alex Henderson coming into the starting line-up.

Matt Lowe returned to the squad for the first time since mid-December – the 3-3 draw at Crewe.

Stanley started well with a couple of decent balls into the box by Shaun Whalley and Jack Nolan.

The first strike on target though fell to Crewe on 13 minutes with Zac Williams shooting on the turn but it was easy for Radek Vitek.

Rio Adebisi’s  26th minute free kick had Vitek diving to his left while Stanley’s first real chance came two minutes later when Henderson sent Tommy Leigh through and he hit the ball on the bounce but it was wide.

Crewe top scorer Elliott Nevitt blasted a shot narrowly wide but chances were at a premium.

Joe Pritchard came on for Jack Nolan for the second half but it was Crewe who started on the front foot, putting a number of dangerous balls into the Reds’ box which Stanley dealt with.

Seamus Conneely and Josh Woods entered the fray on 74 minutes and Ben Woods headed goalwards on 77 minutes but it was routine for Tom Booth – Stanley’s first shot on target.

Josh Woods rifled over the bar after being played through by Conneely in Stanley’s best chance of the match.

Lowe made a welcome return to action on 86 minutes after a lengthy lay-off but neither side could find the breakthrough.
