INTERVIEW: We need to respond against strong Stockport side says Jimmy

Players need to step up says assistant manager

28 September 2023

Assistant manager Jimmy Bell is demanding a response from his Accrington Stanley team when they welcome Stockport County to the Wham Stadium on Saturday.

The Reds lost to Tranmere Rovers last week, who are in the bottom two, and need to bounce back at home where they have lost just once in the league this season.

County, who made the Play-Off final last season, have won their last three league games, including a 5-0 victory over highly-fancied Wrexham last week.

Bell is contending with an injury list with keeper Toby Savin out with a dislocated shoulder and tendon problems after he fell awkwardly at Tranmere.

Defender Jay Rich-Baghuelou is suspended after his dismissal at Prenton Park while midfielders Liam Coyle and Seamus Conneely missed out with injuries last weekend.

Bell said: "Toby’s going to be out for quite a while, months rather than weeks, as he fell awkwardly onto his shoulder, dislocated it and has tendon problems as well which need to be repaired.

"He has got back to No 1 and has been in good form. It’s a big loss but we would have no problem in playing Jack McIntyre.

"Liam has signs of having a hernia and could be out for two or three weeks while Seamus is 50/50 for the weekend.

"Seven days is a long time in football. When we played Sutton United and beat them 4-1, I was thinking we only had Sean McConville out injured.

"Fast forward seven days and it was a poor performance and defeat to Tranmere Rovers.

"It was hard as you plan all week for that game with Seamus and Liam in your team and you find out Friday evening the engine room had gone.

"We had to rejig and change the system and during that game you get a centre-half sent off and lose your keeper so you have had the heart of your team ripped out.

"Fast forward a week and it's completely different but we have had to knuckle down this week.

"You have to get on with it, you got to turn it into a positive, gives other lads a chance who have been on the edge of getting games and I am sure they will take it. We have had a week to plan for the Stockport game and we will be ready for it.

"We have to be positive, the fans as well. It will give other players a big, big opportunity to impress.

"We have got a response in the past and our home form is always better than our away form.

"To get an away victory, you cannot carry anyone, you need everyone chomping at the bit.

"At home, I don’t know why, players play better and that’s the big plus this week.

"We have got unbelievable support, they have been magnificent since we have been here.”

County, managed by Dave Challinor, are ninth in League Two, one point ahead of the 12th-placed Reds.

Bell continued: "Stockport are a point ahead of us and the bookmakers make them odds on to beat us at home. They are tipped to be right up there.

"We are going to have to firstly turn up at home, secondly we are going have to be better than against Tranmere and thirdly we are going to have to make it as uncomfortable as we can for them.

"It’s not all doom and gloom. We have a big game in front of us but it’s winnable. They had an unbelievable result last week, I watched the game, they took their chances well."
