Nolan gives Stanley dream start but Hills sees red

11 November 2023

Ten-man Accrington Stanley lost out to Crawley Town as they slipped out of the Play-Off places.

Jack Nolan gave the Reds a dream start but a goal either side of the half put the Red Devils in charge before Brad Hills was sent off for Stanley in the 74th minute and Crawley scored the resulting penalty.

It means Stanley have suffered two successive league losses while Scott Lindsey’s side won for the first time in the league since September.

Nolan came in for the suspended Tommy Leigh while Kody Adedoyin started up front to replace the absent Josh Andrews.

Stanley had the perfect opening when Nolan scored within 90 seconds. He got the ball on the right in the area, cut onto his left foot and drilled the ball in at the near post. It was his fourth goal of the season.

Stanley were on top but Crawley equalised on eight minutes when a pass from Klaidi Lolos cut open the Reds defence to send Danilo Orsi clean through and he side-footed past Jon McCracken.

Crawley eased their way into the game with Lolos almost getting on the end of a Will Wright dangerous cross and a Lolos free header straight into the arms of McCracken.

It then could have gone either way as both sides had chances.

Jay Rich-Baghuelou burst forward on 28 minutes but his strike was deflected narrowly wide while Shaun Whalley fizzed a ball across the box which just needed a touch.

Crawley came close to a second on 37 minutes when Nicholas Tsaroulla tricked his way into the area and his cross was almost on the goalline but Orsi couldn’t tap it over the line.

At the other end, Ben Gladwin had to clear a Nolan effort off the line while goalkeeper Luca Ashby-Hammond tipped over a Joe Pritchard dipping strike and Adedoyin fired home but the flag was up before half-time.

The Red Devils took the lead on 48 minutes when centre back Will Wright unleashed a fierce strike from 25 yards and it rifled into the back of the net.

Crawley came close to a second minutes later as the ball bobbled dangerously around the six-yard box but the Reds managed to hook it clear before a free kick was awarded.

John Coleman made a triple substitution on 58 minutes with Matt Lowe, Josh Woods and Seamus Conneely entering the pitch.

They battled hard with Pritchard’s strike deflected just wide while the Crawley keeper pushed away a Conneely strong effort.

However Hills saw red for bringing down Orsi in the area on 74 minutes and the striker despatched the resulting penalty for his second of the game.

The match got stop-start then with both sides picking up yellow cards after minor skirmishes.

In nine minutes of added time, Whalley headed over a Josh Woods cross but they left West Sussex empty-handed.
