INTERVIEW: Toby up for relegation battle

Goalie returns from emergency loan to help Reds fight against drop

16 March 2023

Goalkeeper Toby Savin is back and ready to give 100 per cent to make sure Accrington Stanley secure their League One status.

The 21-year-old has been at League Two promotion-chasers Stevenage on an emergency loan for the last month.

He returned between the sticks for the Reds against Charlton two games ago when Burnley loan keeper Lukas Jensen was suspended for a sending off against Ipswich.

And Savin was back in goal following Jensen’s dismissal in the 3-1 defeat against Portsmouth on Tuesday. The Reds aren’t appealing the sending off and so Jensen will sit out a two-game ban.

“It’s been a whirlwind month,” said Savin, who came through the ranks with the Reds. “When I wasn’t playing for Accrington in February, I sat down with the gaffer.

“I have played over 100 games and everyone knows I want to be playing football wherever that is. He sent me to Stevenage, they needed an emergency loan while Lukas was doing a good job here. It was perfect timing and it worked for both parties.

“I was happy to go because I want to be playing football but I am back now and ready to give my all for the club and keep it where it belongs.”

Stanley take on fellow relegation rivals MK Dons on Saturday with a win for either side a chance to push themselves away from the bottom four.

“Every game we play is a must-win scenario, each game is a cup final to get as many points as possible towards the end of the season,” said Savin.

“Injuries have affected us this season but we are not using it as an excuse, we keep fighting.

“I have seen some mad seasons at Accrington since I have been here but this is up there with one of the worst with injuries and bans all contributing to where we are.

“But us as players will give it all we can to get as many points in keep this club in League One and I will give 100 per cent.”
