INTERVIEW: Sean eyes Wembley dream

Lincoln have a good home record but are beatable says McConville

Sean McConville is dreaming about Wembley – but won’t get too carried away due to Lincoln City’s impressive record at the LNER Stadium.

The Imps haven’t lost at home in League One this season and they will be formidable opposition for the Reds in the last eight of the Papa Johns Trophy tonight.

Lincoln won this competition in 2018 and both sides know they are just two games away from a Wembley visit.

“It’s an ambition of John Coleman’s to get to Wembley and he has backed that up with his team selections throughout the competition,” said McConville, who is back after a long injury lay-off.

“It’s got us to a stage where we are two games away from Wembley but there is no tougher game than going away to Lincoln who have one of the best home records in the country.

“It will be a quarter-final, high intensity with both teams going at it to get to the semi-final and then hopefully a trip to Wembley.

“We have taken this competition seriously from the get-go and hopefully it will pay dividends with a win and get one step closer.”

The Reds drew at Lincoln 1-1 in November in League One with Stanley now in the relegation places and Lincoln 16th in the table.

“When we went to Lincoln in the league, we had to stop the rot after five defeats. We upped the intensity and workrate and got a point.

“Lincoln’s home record stands above anyone’s so to go there and get a point, and on the night we were unlucky not to get three, it will be a mark for us knowing we can go there and get a result.

“They are not flying high in our league so they are beatable.”

While tonight is a big game, McConville knows what the Reds primary aim is this season.

“Our main target is keeping us in League One. With our position in the league, we know how big Saturday’s game against Bristol Rovers is regardless of what happens tonight.

“It’s a home game and being in bottom four, it’s massive for us.

“Firstly we have got to take care of this game tonight, it is a little bit of a distraction but an exciting distraction.

“As a player everyone wants to play at Wembley, it’s the Holy Grail for the lads and their families and the fans. A trip there would be unbelievable.”
