INTERVIEW: Whalley keen to right wrongs at Port Vale

35-year-old not worrying about the league table, only the next game

Shaun Whalley says he is not worrying about the League One table but just concentrating on Accrington Stanley’s next game.

The Reds travel to 14th place Port Vale tomorrow night, one of their games in hand, as they look to climb out of the relegation places.

“We have 20 league games left, that’s nearly half a season,” said the 35-year-old. “I am not worrying too much about where we are in the league table as we just need to pick up three points where we can.

“If I am honest, it’s not going to be pretty football from here on in and that’s fine with me.

“We have got six/seven maybe eight defenders currently unavailable, it’s unprecedented, but we have just got to dig in and work hard and hope things go out way.

“It will be a battle from here on in and I think we are more than up for the fight.”

Whalley watched the 3-0 defeat to Lincoln again on Sunday.

“I watched the game back by myself to see what I could have done better and what went wrong. When you are playing it’s quite hard to see and understand where it’s going wrong.

“It was an even game, Sean (McConville) should have had a penalty after around 16 minutes and the first goal is always important.

“They got the goal and then we are having to chase the game. Then they got the second and third was straight away and it’s pretty much game over.

“We need to see what went wrong as a team and put it right at Port Vale.

“Everyone is working as hard as they can and trying their best. You look at the amount of injuries but we can’t feel sorry for ourselves.

“Sometimes you look at treatment room and how many top players we have in there but whoever the gaffer puts out there will work as hard as they can.

“Everyone was working hard on Saturday and the first goal was vital and they managed to get it and it was a long road for us then.

“I am desperate to get out there tomorrow night. It’s another big game, we dropped down in the table but we are still only one win from getting out of the relegation zone and that’s what we are looking at.

“We need to get the amount of points to make us safe and I am sure we will do that.”
