INTERVIEW: Seamus hopes there are more good times to come

Skipper talks about his ten seasons at Stanley as Reds look ahead to Harrogate

Seamus Conneely feels he has plenty to give Accrington Stanley and hopes there are more good memories to come.

The 35-year-old has entered his tenth season with the club, enjoying a promotion, a Play-Off campaign, but unfortunately relegation last season.

After one win, one loss and one draw in their three League Two games so far, Conneely is looking ahead to the visit of Harrogate Town tomorrow.

"I want to show I am worth my place on the pitch, in the dressing room and that I can bring something to the team," said the Reds skipper.

"I am desperate for this team to do well this year, the pain from last year is still there, it won’t ever go away but will be easier if we can start winning matches again.

"It was a great feeling on the first day of the season to win a game again and since then it’s been difficult.

"Walking off the pitch at Gillingham and walking out of the dug out against Barrow the other night was a horrible feeling and one I experienced too many times last year and I don’t want to experience it too many times this year."

He admits he has adapted his game as he has got older.

"My game has changed. I scored three goals in five games in my first season, I got forward a lot more but since then I have become more of an anchor in midfield, not up and down as much and more side to side but still covering the same ground.

"My body is not able to play 46 games this season, I understand that, the manager understands it and the physio.

"But my football knowledge, my football intelligence has increased by playing over 300 games, playing with and against certain players and working with the manager and coaching staff. It’s a balance. You lose things and gain in other areas.

"Looking back, I would never believe I could be here for so long and play so many games.

"I had so many good times such as party buses back from brilliant away games, winning trophies, promotions.

"Then there have been difficult times – Stevenage, Wimbledon, being relegated last year.

"For what this club given me, it was the best footballing decision I every made to follow John Coleman here. But it’s not the end of it, I hope there are still some good times ahead."
