15-year-old Harley Lawton grabs an extra-time winner for the Reds

27 October 2021

Accrington Stanley's Harley Lawton scored an extra-time winner to clinch a 4-3 victory over Wigan Athletic and secure his team's place in the second round of this season's FA Youth Cup.

The 15-year-old had only been on the pitch for two minutes when he rifled a low shot across goalkeeper Tom Watson and into the bottom corner.

Leslie Adekoya's first half brace saw the Reds go in at half-time with a two-goal lead, with Lewis Trickett then producing an excellent finish to add a third shortly after the break for John Miles' side.

However, the visitors responded superbly and they pulled a goal back from the penalty spot on 62 minutes through Arthur Lomax.

Levi Welsh grabbed a second for The Latics shortly after and Kieran Driscoll's side then found the equaliser with six minutes left to play when Chris Sze fired a long-range effort past goalkeeper Louis Hood.

The game headed to extra-time and it looked as though this evening's tie would be settled on penalties, but Lawton's late driven strike ensured the Reds will be in the hat for the next round.
