Dan gutted at red card

27 January 2019

Dan Barlaser felt he let his teammates down with his red card against Derby in the Emirates FA Cup Fourth Round loss but thought it was harsh.

The Newcastle loan midfielder was booked in the third minute by referee Jon Moss for a challenge on Harry Wilson and then was shown a second yellow on 59 minutes for a tackle on David Nugent.

Martyn Waghorn scored the winner for the Rams in the 78th minute following a disputed free kick with Derby also finishing with ten men following the red card shown to Jayden Bogle on 90 minutes, pulling back sub Paul Smyth who was bearing down on goal.

“It's very hard to take,” said Barlaser. “Obviously I am disappointed in myself in getting sent off and letting the team down but before that we had chances.

“I didn't watch it after I was sent off but apparently we had chances too and their goal was lucky.

“I would say the second yellow, ok, but the first one was the third minute so I don't know why he has given that. It's my first tackle.

“I can see why he has given the second one maybe but I feel the first one was harsh.

“I had a chance just before the second yellow and I thought it was heading into the corner but it hit their player – I wasn't sure if it hit his hand or not as it looked similar to the one given against me last week at Charlton.

“It's frustrating but these things happen in football. It's the first time I have been sent off in the professional football and I have got to hold my hands up and say the second tackle, I probably shouldn't have done it, and I have to move on.

“I let the lads down but in the first and second half we had chances to score so everyone is disappointed.”

The midfielder believes they can take heart from their performance against the Premier League hopefuls and take it into League One, although he will miss Tuesday's trip to Gillingham now.

“They are a Championship side and I think we were the better team, we just didn't finish our chances.

“In the first half, we had a couple of chances to score and, if we take them, it's a different game.

“I think we have dominated the game against a Championship team who are in the Play-Offs and are looking to get promoted so we take a lot from that.

“In League One, it's tight at the top and the bottom and now we have to concentrate on the league.

“If we get a win on Tuesday and Saturday we are back towards the top ten. It's a massive couple of weeks for us.”
