REPORT: Stanley 0 Ipswich Town 2

Two late goals end Reds unbeaten start to League One campaign

3 September 2022

Accrington Stanley lost for the first time this season in League One with a 2-0 defeat against top of the table Ipswich Town.

After three league draws at the Wham Stadium this season, Stanley had defended well and looked on course for at least a point.

But substitute Conor Chaplin flicked home the opener on 76 minutes from a corner and then Ipswich put the game to bed on 87 minutes to maintain their own unbeaten start to the campaign.

Matt Lowe scored in midweek in the Papa Johns Trophy and the striker came into the starting XI.

Ipswich lined up with three ex-Reds in their starting pack in Kayden Jackson, Janoi Donacien and Cameron Burgess.

The first shot on target was on six minutes with Sam Morsy’s long range effort easy for Lukas Jensen.

At the other end, Christian Walton dived low to deny Sean McConville while the Ipswich keeper did well to keep out an effort from Harvey Rodgers.

Walton was busy on 16 minutes, leaping to push a Joe Pritchard strike over the bar.

Ipswich then came more into it with a Burgess header deflected over and the Reds able to clear a couple of goalmouth scrambles as they defended strongly.

Doug Tharme had to head clear almost on the goalline on 30 minutes after Wes Burns had flicked the ball over Jensen while a Lee Evans free kick into the arms of the Stanley keeper finished the half.

Kody Adedoyin came on at half-time, for the injured Pritchard, but was off within seven minutes with a hamstring injury as Stanley’s injury woes continued, with Josh Woods coming on.

Ipswich came close on 56 minutes when Jackson burst through and raced past the Reds defence but Jensen managed to get his body in front of his shot to deflect it off target.

Town continued to press around the Stanley box and Burns saw a curling effort take a deflection while a diving header from Evans was caught by Jensen.

Hamilton’s effort was caught by Walton for Stanley but then a Chaplin shot was deflected for a corner.

From Evans’ 76th minute corner, Chaplin got there at the near post to clip the ball home.

Then Chaplin tried his luck from distance on 87 minutes and the ball took a deflection to secure the win for the visitors.
