REPORT: Plymouth Argyle 2 Stanley 2

Pritchard and Charles on target at Home Park

30 January 2021

Joe Pritchard and Dion Charles were on target as Accrington Stanley drew 2-2 at Plymouth Argyle.

Pritchard headed the Reds ahead on 41 minutes but Pilgrims top scorer Luke Jephcott replied within two minutes.

However, a minute after the re-start, Charles pounced to restore the lead before Niall Ennis equalised 12 minutes from time as Stanley made it two without loss and Plymouth celebrated being unbeaten in January in the league.

John Coleman kept with the same starting XI which beat then league leaders Hull City on Tuesday which meant Cameron Burgess, back from a ban, was on the bench. New loan signing striker Paul Smyth was also among the substitutes.

It was a fast opening with Pritchard unable to connect properly with a Charles cross while Nathan Baxter saved at the near post to deny Joe Edwards.

The Reds won a number of early free kicks around the area, Matt Butcher coming close with one which was just wide of the post.

Pritchard put a great ball into the box which just evaded both Charles and Colby Bishop at the far post as the Reds dominated the early stages.

Plymouth came into it and it was end-to-end as Jephcott fired across the goal and wide from an angle in the 35th minute and, at the other end, ex-Red loan defender Jerome Opoku pulled off a superb tackle to stop Charles having a clean shot on goal.

The Reds opened the scoring on 41 minutes when Charles rushed down the left and played in the perfect cross and Pritchard got in front of the defence and headed home.

However the lead only lasted two minutes as Panutche Camara crossed, the ball bounced around the area and fell nicely for top scorer Jephcott to fire home in the six yard box. It was his 16th goal of the campaign.

Stanley retook the lead immediately after the restart on 46 minutes. Pritchard’s ball went across the goal with Tariq Uwakwe keeping it in and pulling it back for Charles to fire home and make it two in two games for the former Southport striker.

Danny Mayor was a threat for Argyle and he fired narrowly wide after running at the Reds defence while Stanley looked to increase their lead and goalkeeper Michael Cooper had to finger tip over a Sean McConville free kick.

Argyle had the ball in the net on 56 minutes when they broke quickly but Camara was off-side.

Lowe made a triple substitution on 68 minutes and it was Argyle in action next, Mayor forcing a diving save out of Baxter.

QPR striker Smyth came on for this second Stanley debut on 75 minutes but it was Plymouth who struck next on 78 minutes.

They broke down the left through Mayor and he linked up with Ennis and it was January signing Ennis who slammed the ball home in the six yard box

Camara and Mayor continued to press but Stanley’s defence held firm while, at the other end, the Reds looked for a winner with Butcher firing over.
