Accrington Stanley defender Connor O'Brien has today signed a new two-year contract with the club.

O'Brien, who is a boyhood Stanley fan, joined the club's youth system in 2012 as an eight-year-old and then signed his maiden professional contract two summers ago, before a loan spell in non-league at Radcliffe FC.

The 19-year-old made his first start in last season's 2-1 Sky Bet League One win over Oxford United and has since played a further 30 times for the Reds, with the defender also involved in every domestic fixture in 24.

O'Brien's new contract will keep him at the Wham Stadium until the summer of 2026.

John Doolan said: "I am delighted, so happy. A lot of hard work has gone into this deal.

"Connor has committed himself to the club and me and Ged Brannan, and I am so happy with the Board for backing us on this as well.

"It was so important for us to get this deal done. Connor's mum, dad, nan, grandad, they are a lovely family, and it's nice to see all his hard work has paid off.

"Now Connor's hard work needs to carry on for him to kick onto the next level. There is loads of potential there and I am sure it will happen.

"He finished the season really strongly and I want him to bring it into pre-season, into the season, and to kick on. The world is his oyster. We will work on the training ground with him and it's up to him now.

"Connor is a credit to his family, he is great off the pitch, he is no ounce of trouble, he trains really well, and obviously the evidence is there when he puts the shirt on, he is fantastic for this club."

Connor added: "I'm buzzing, it's been a long time coming. I'm just happy that we've got it over the line and now I can start preparing for next season.

"It means a lot to me and my family, because everyone supports Accrington.

"The future looks good and I'm just excited to get going really."
