INTERVIEW: John excited about first match as Stanley Manager

Reds make trip to bottom club Sutton in new era for the club

John Doolan is looking to get his managerial campaign off to a winning start when Accrington Stanley make the trip to bottom club Sutton United.

Doolan was announced as Stanley's new First Team Manager today, succeeding John Coleman.

He has been in Interim charge for three games with one win, one draw and one defeat and, with eight games left, is hoping to steer the Reds to a top-half League Two finish, before assembling his own squad for next season.

"First and foremost the ambition is always to stay in League Two," said Doolan.

"But the ambition for next season is try and kick on and see where it takes us.

"We have to get the playing staff right, getting the mixture of youth and experience.

"If you get it right on the pitch and get the results, you don't know where it takes you, the Play-Offs and we have won League Two before so there is no saying we can't do that again.

"With eight games to go, I can have a look at players, make decisions on younger players whether they sink or swim, have a look at senior players and give minutes to players on the pitch to prove themselves.

"The most important thing is the fans and the team which is on the pitch, if you get the team and results right, it keeps everyone happy."

Sutton have not won at home since October but have won at Forest Green and Notts County recently.

"It has been business as usual, we have done the preparation and we will travel down - the lads know what is coming in terms of Sutton," continued the Reds manager.

"They don't get beat by many goals and that may sound mad as I know they are fighting for their lives, but the lads know it will be a battle and they can play a bit and they know about balls coming into the box.

"We have to stand up and be counted. They had a good win at Forest Green away, I have watched the game, they played to their strengths and, looking at the previous results, they do not get beat by many.

"We know what's coming, it's tough opposition and a good battle and one we are all looking forward to."

The Reds will be without Man United loan keeper Radek Vitek who is on Czechia Under-20s duty with Toby Savin and Jack McIntyre in the frame to be Stanley's No. 1 tomorrow.

Doolan said: "I will have a chat with goalkeeping coach Andy Dibble. We have a fantastic coach in Dibs and what he gives in his day-to-day knowledge and expertise is invaluable to Jack and Toby and Radek has been thriving."

Lewis Shipley returns from suspension, Joe Pritchard is in the frame to start, while Matt Lowe should be back from injury in the next few weeks.
