Stanley striker Anjola Popoola discusses the 6-1 Under-18s win over Shrewsbury Town

24 January 2024

Accrington Stanley striker Anjola Popoola discusses the 6-1 Under-18s win over Shrewsbury Town.

"I am proud to score my 25th and 26th goals of the season, definitely. I think being in the right places, that's what's helped me get all them goals.

"I think today I let myself down a bit, I could've got more. I think I could've got an extra two and if I had better shots, I could've at least got four today.

"You've got to play the game as it is. You can't try and create any pretty football, it's more direct, get in there, get in behind and fight against the wind, really.

"At the back end of last season, I came here and from what the gaffer (John Coleman) has said, I think that it's a really good opportunity and it's down to me to put the work in.

"I like to get the ball to feet, I like to run in behind, it depends what the team wants, I adapt my game for the team, but I also like to play the way I want to play, I like to threat in behind and I like to take people on.

"If you put the work in and you work hard, there's always an opportunity here.

"We're all so close to each other and I think the gaffer, Jimmy (Bell), and John (Doolan), they can all see what you're doing and if you can leave a good impression, you'll be in the good books.

"Alex Henderson and Connor O'Brien have been doing really well for themselves and hopefully if I keep working hard, that could be me."
