Stanley legend McConville leaves Wham Stadium

Sean: 'I have worn the badge with honour and never left anything out on the pitch'

Accrington Stanley will say goodbye to club legend Sean McConville at his testimonial in July as his contract will end with the Reds this summer.

The 35-year-old has spent two spells spanning 11 years with Stanley - from 2009-11 before returning in 2015 where he played a massive part in helping the Reds win the League Two title in 2018.

McConville has been vice captain and captained the side as well as being the Reds record EFL appearance holder.

In a statement, he said: "As they say, all good things come to an end and my time at Accrington has come to an end.

"I have 445 appearances, 73 goals, 95 assists and memories which will last a lifetime and I have made friends for life.

"Manager John Coleman and Jimmy Bell along with Chairman Eric Whalley took a chance on an 18-year-old with a dream of playing football and I owe them everything.

"The fanbase took me as one of their own and my family helped my dream become a reality.

"I have worn the badge with honour and never left anything out on the pitch.

"I have to thank my mum, my dad, my step mum Maxine, my brother Anthony and my three children, as well as my angel in the sky Jenna.

"They sacrificed a lot to let me achieve my dream and I couldn't have done it without them.

"I owe them so much.

"I will be a Red for life and I look forward to saying goodbye at my testimonial and then see where the next chapter in my life takes me."

McConville has been a massive part of the Reds success - with the 2011 and 2016 Play-Off campaigns, the 2018 League Two title and then his goals and assists helping Stanley stay in League One for five years.

However a freak ankle injury - which he is now recovering from - meant appearances were limited to six games this season.

"I started this season well and believed I would have a good season, with double figures by Christmas, having scored two goals in the first five League Two matches and I could have had more. I felt great at League Two level.

"Then it was just a freak injury - a studs caught in the floor and it broke my ankle. I needed an operation, injections, scans - it was nothing to do with my age or ability, just one of those things.

"I am fit now but obviously the season has finished.

"I am so proud of being Accrington's highest appearance holder in the EFL.

"I am proud of what we achieved at Accrington in 2018, in winning the league and there are just so many great memories.

"Making my debut, scoring goals, playing with some great players, enjoying being at Accrington with the fans and having the chance for my children to see me play football - that was a massive joy to me."

Chairman Andy Holt said: "Sean has been a brilliant servant to the club, he has been part of Stanley teams which have created some superb memories that will live long in all our minds.

"His service has been greatly appreciated, he fully deserves his club legend status and everyone at the club wishes him all the best.

"It will be good to see him to say goodbye properly at his testimonial game."

McConville's testimonial game will be in July, with the opposition to be announced shortly.
