INTERVIEW: Coley looks ahead to FGR

Reds hit with more injury problems

5 October 2023

John Coleman knows Accrington Stanley will have to recreate a performance like Morecambe on Tuesday if they are to overcome Forest Green Rovers at the Wham Stadium on Saturday.

23rd-placed Rovers, who were relegated with the Reds last season, have picked up all their seven points on their travels and have former Premier League striker Troy Deeney their top scorer with four goals.

Stanley, in 15th spot, are boosted after an entertaining draw at Morecambe midweek, where Coleman praised his side for creating chances, passing the ball better and 'playing how I know how we can play.'

"Forest Green have possibly picked up more points away from home because of the way they play the game,  they maybe better suited to counter attacking," said the Reds boss.

"We have to try and form a plan to counter the way Forest Green might play.

"We passed the ball better on Tuesday, it was a step in the right direction and hopefully we can carry that on on Saturday."

Last season the Reds suffered from an injury nightmare and, despite losing Sean McConville in August, Coleman had plenty of options early on in the campaign but a glut of injuries has led to several players now facing spells on the sidelines.

Goalkeeper Toby Savin has a shoulder injury, Liam Coyle is struggling with a hernia problem, captain Seamus Conneely has a hamstring injury and Seb Quirk is likely to be out for a lengthy spell with a bad hamstring injury. Jay Rich-Baghuelou sits out the final game of his three-match ban.

"From going well with injuries and thinking we were over the curse we have been blighted with, now we have a really bad injury to Seb, a strange one for Coyley, a bad one for Toby and the skipper has had a reoccurrence of last year’s problems.

"We went from a week of having a clean bill of health to having four taken away for us for a significant period and you add to that Jay Rich-Baghuelou getting sent off.

"I haven’t even mentioned Sean McConville.

"Within a blink of an eye, you have five players out and at least four of them are starting and your experience goes out the window as we haven’t got experienced players to replace them.

"It’s been a big problem. We have got a lot of young lads who are very good footballers and will get better but you have to go through some pain with them.

"We have good lads who are enthusiastic about playing football, we have to bring the youngsters out of their shell more, give them the experience and feedback and try and incrementally improve them as we go on throughout the games."
