INTERVIEW: It's been tough but we have to look forward says Notts

Defender building towards strong campaign next season

Defender Michael Nottingham is targeting finishing the season with a win and then working towards a promotion push next season.

The Reds are on the brink of relegation to League Two and travel to 19th place Oxford United for the final game of the League One campaign on Sunday.

23rd placed Stanley are not mathematically relegated but need a 16-goal swing and other results to go their way.

Nottingham missed a lot of the current campaign with an ankle tendon injury sustained in pre-season, which needed an operation, and he knows he and his teammates can only look forward now.

“We have got to look to the future now, learn from this whole season and plan going forward,” said the 34-year-old.

“It’s been an upsetting, hard season but we have got to put it behind us as soon as possible.

“We have to see the season out properly, we have a game at the weekend that we want to win, we owe that to the fans.

“It’s important we go to Oxford with the right attitude and mentality.

“It’s important we do learn from our mistakes this year and quickly try and redevelop as a club and, as players, try our best to put things right next season.

“We have to get this game out of the way then everyone will be focusing on themselves and contracts and what they are going to do and, as a club, we have to make sure we are in the right place and right frame of mind to have a good go next year.

“This season has been tough for all of us. However, it’s not the end of the world. There still can be positives next year, hopefully we can keep the squad together as we have got a good squad and hopefully we can get players back and keep them fit for next season and then we will be a threat.

“It’s important we stay positive and try and get things right, try to get better and hopefully we will have a great pre-season and be ready to roll.

“I am a positive person, I go out in every game believing we will win as I believe in myself and the players I play with.  There is no reason why we can’t do it next year although it won’t be easy.”

On his own season, Nottingham said: “The injury has been a massive for me. I am looking forward to summer, we know our fate, and it’s important for me to get recovery in and then, for me, start working towards a full pre-season and hopefully be ready for a successful season.”
