Pressley and Longelo on target against ten-man Rovers as Reds move out of bottom four

4 March 2023

Accrington Stanley moved out of the relegation places thanks to a 2-1 win over bottom club Forest Green Rovers.

Duncan Ferguson’s side took the lead before they were reduced to 10-men and Aaron Pressley and Rosaire Longelo were the goal scorers for the Reds either side of the break.

It was a welcome relief for the Reds, who moved two points clear of 21st place Morecambe and extended their unbeaten League One run to three games.

There was just one change for Stanley with the injured Shaun Whalley replaced by Arsenal loan striker Nathan Oyedeji-Butler. Cody Adekoyin and Doug Tharme returned to the bench.

Stanley had early shots at goal through Aaron Pressley, who fired over, and Sean McConville whose curling effort was caught by Ross Doohan.

Lukas Jensen’s first save came on 10 minutes when defender Corey O’Keeffe burst forward but the Burnley loan keeper kept him out.

Jensen was in the action again on 19 minutes, superbly denying Myles Peart-Harris from close range.

Forest Green opened the scoring on 22 minutes when O’Keeffe broke quickly, threaded the ball to Brentford loanee Peart-Harris and he slid the ball under the body of Jensen.

Stanley had a chance to level on 28 minutes when Oyedeji-Butler raced down the right wing and played in a cross to Sean McConville but he could only steer the ball into Doohan’s arms.

Rovers Oliver Casey was shown a straight red for a what was judged a high tackle on Butler-Oyedeji on 43 minutes just outside the Forest Green area.

From the resulting McConville free kick, Aaron Pressley headed home his fifth goal of the season to go in all-square at half-time.

Dan Martin came on at the break for Stanley and the Reds were trying to capitalise on their man advantage, both Mo Sangare and Butler-Oyedeji rifling over the bar.

Jack Nolan came on on 64 minutes as the Reds boosted their attack and Stanley took the lead immediately.

Pressley fed the ball to Rosaire Longelo on the right of the area and he fired a low shot into the far corner of the net for his second goal for Stanley.

Cody Adedoyin made a welcome return for the Reds on 72 minutes after a three-month injury lay-off as the Reds look ahead to two away games at Ipswich and Charlton next.
