Win over Bristol Rovers could see Reds above relegation zone

Seamus Conneely admits it’s ‘not nice’ being in the relegation places and knows Accrington Stanley need to get out of there as quickly as possible – and a win against Bristol Rovers tomorrow could do it.

The Reds currently sit in 21st place in League One, two points behind 20th place Cambridge United, but have two games in hand.

They come up against Joey Barton’s Bristol Rovers side who are in good form, sitting in eighth place in the league and with four wins in the last six league games.

Their top scorer is the league’s top scorer Aaron Collins with 13 goals and 10 assists but Stanley have already got one over on the Gas this season, beating them 1-0 in September with Joe Pritchard on target.

“It’s a big game for us and them,” said the Stanley captain. “We have to try and get three points, it’s important with the position we are in the league. We have had a couple of cup games which are a distraction from the league but we are back at it now.

“It’s not nice to be in the relegation zone, you never want to be there. We have been there a few times this season, and got out of it quickly, and that would be a carrot for tomorrow.

“If we were to win, there is a chance we could get ourselves out of the relegation zone and it’s not a place you want to be in. The longer you are in it, the more difficult it is to get out of it. It would be a big help to get out of it as soon as possible.”

Conneely knows the continued backing of the home fans is vital in the second half of the campaign as Stanley are still fighting on three fronts – the Reds are still in the Papa Johns Trophy and the Emirates FA Cup.

“The fans are huge, if we can get this place rocking between now and the end of the season that will go an awful long way to seeing us where we want to be come the end of the season.

“But we have to be the ones to get the fans going, we have to produce, to play the way the manager wants us to play which is on the front foot, winning headers, challenges, playing good football and then the crowd react to that and it becomes a very difficult place for away teams to come.

“That’s what we want to make it between now and the end of the season. It’s an awful lot easier place to play with the home fans behind us.”

Injuries have meant the Reds skipper has moved from midfield into the backline in recent games but he says he doesn’t mind.

“It is more stressful at the back as your concentration levels have to be more than midfield.

“After games you are more tired mentally as you have to concentrate for the whole 90 minutes while in midfield you do not concentrate to same degree.

“It’s become a needs must with the injuries but thankfully there are a few lads coming back and hopefully a few new bodies coming in which will stand us in good stead in the second half of the season.”
