INTERVIEW: Leeds fan Harvey out to upset his mates

Rodgers up against club he has supported all his life in FA Cup

Leeds fan Harvey Rodgers is aiming to upset his United-supporting mates in Saturday's Emirates FA Cup Fourth Round tie live on BBC1 on Saturday.

The Accrington Stanley defender, born in Selby, is a big fan of Jesse Marsch’s Premier League side and goes to support them when he can.

His friends are Leeds supporters and will be at the Wham Stadium hoping the Yorkshire side progress but Rodgers says he and his Stanley team-mates have the belief they can pull off an upset.

“Yes all my mates are cheering on Leeds but I think the ideal scenario for them would be for Leeds to win and me to score,” said the 26-year-old. “Although maybe they would like to see me get tortured by the Leeds players!

“I am a Leeds United fan. I have been a big Leeds fan all my life, I go and watch them when I can. My mates are bigger fans than me.

“Before Boreham Wood, I wasn’t allowing myself to look forward to the Saturday's game but as soon as the final whistle went on Tuesday, it was relief that Leeds was going to happen.

“Then my phone didn’t stop ringing but as soon as I told my mates they have to pay for tickets, I didn’t get many replies!

“We know we have got to keep it tight and hope we can cause them problems from set-pieces and long throw-ins. We have got to believe that we can beat them.”

Rodgers admitted there have been more lows than highs for him watching Leeds with them in League One and the Championship over the years before their Premier League return in 2020.

“There are a lot more downs than ups but, over the last few years, it’s been brilliant watching them. I went to a few games when Leeds got promoted to the Premier League and we are back where we belong.

“Playing against them is something I will enjoy, we (Accrington Stanley) are not doing too well in the league so every game brings pressure. On Saturday, there is not as much pressure, we are not expected to win.

“It’s something to look back on saying I have played against the club I have supported all my life and all my family and friends were there.

“Hopefully we can give a good account of ourselves.

“I will prepare as normal, I am pretty chilled out, I am quite looking forward to it more than nervous.”
