INTERVIEW: Don't rule out an upset says Sean

Winger relishing another massive cup clash for the Reds

27 January 2023

Sean McConville has played in some massive games for Accrington Stanley and knows tomorrow's Emirates FA Cup Fourth Round clash with Premier League Leeds United is another to relish.

McConville enjoyed victories over Burnley and Ipswich in cup competitions for the Reds and has played against Fulham, Newcastle and at West Ham in Stanley colours.

Now the winger is excited again to test himself against Premier League stars and hopes Stanley can cause an upset live on BBC1.

Stanley beat National League side Boreham Wood on Tuesday night in a replay to set up the tie with Leeds who have sold out their allocation.

“Leeds is massive, I have played in some big games and it’s got the makings of another one of them," said the 33-year-old.

“I am looking forward to the town coming out to support the lads and hopefully we can work as hard as we physically can and nick a result against a Premier League team and create one of those famous upsets.

“You can taste it when the Wham Stadium is packed, it has a different feel to it than your average League One game.

“The excitement, the buzz, everything which goes in the FA Cup.

“I think it’s roles reversed from Tuesday night. Every ounce of pressure was on the players to get a over the line and we felt it as a group. It was make the club £250,000- £300,000 or nothing and, probably more than most because I have been here so long, I understand what it meant to the club.

“Now we are the underdogs so Saturday is a free hit. Everyone is expecting Leeds to come and beat us and in the past it’s something we have thrived off. We have got to enjoy the day but, saying that, it won’t be an enjoyable day if we get tonked 4 or 5-0.”

McConville says he thinks the watching world wide audience will be impressed with the Wham Stadium.

“For some of the younger lads, they might be on the TV for the first time but the best thing for me is people seeing what the chairman has done.

“Hopefully spectators will look at the pitch, the changing rooms and the bar and say ‘that’s a proper League One outfit.’"
