REPORT: Huddersfield Town 0-3 Stanley

Adekoya, Patrick and Woods all score first half goals in comfortable 3-0 victory at Huddersfield

8 February 2023

Accrington Stanley Under-23s climbed to second in the Central League table and made it eight games unbeaten across all competitions as first half goals from Leslie Adekoya, Oliver Patrick and Josh Woods saw Ged Brannan and Andy Gray's side to a comfortable 3-0 victory at Huddersfield Town.

Second-year scholar Max Clayton was handed his maiden Under-23s start and defender Connor O'Brien returned to the starting XI, after making his first team debut against Port Vale the night before.

A further three changes were made to the side that drew 3-3 with Preston North End at the Stanley Sports Hub on matchday five, as Lewis Trickett, Adekoya and Emerich Poilly all came into the team.

Brannan and Gray will have been delighted to see their side, who kept up their 100% away record in the league, race into a two-goal lead after just four minutes in West Yorkshire.

With less than 180 seconds on the clock, Jack Nolan intercepted a misplaced cross-field pass and proceeded to cross for Adekoya to head home at the back post; the Irishman's first Central League goal of the season.

It was two straight from the restart as Patrick did superbly well to dispossess The Terriers and the Oldham-born midfielder then raced towards goal, before slotting the ball past Josh Mazfari and inside the far corner.

The Reds continued to pile on the pressure and Adekoya should have grabbed his second to make it three on 18 minutes, but the 18-year-old striker was unable to convert Woods' drilled ball across the box.

However; the game's third goal did come on the stroke of half-time and Nolan was again involved, with Woods turning home the winger's low cross to score his second goal in his last three Under-23s games.

After two headed goals in last week's draw, substitute Owen Devonport looked to have added a fourth just before the hour-mark, but the Clitheroe-loanee's glancing header was saved well by Mazfari.

The hosts were then reduced to 10 men four minutes later, as defender Omari Mrisho received a red card following a shove on Bailey Sloane.

Next up for Stanley is a home tie against Wrexham at the Sports Hub on Wednesday 15th February, 1pm kick-off; with the Reds then travelling to the Central League leaders Blackpool on Tuesday 28th February.
