Nolan the late hero for ten-man Reds after Quirk was sent off

19 August 2023

Jack Nolan was the Stanley hero as his late, late goal gave the Reds a 2-1 win over Harrogate Town.

Sean McConville had made it two in two games with his 28th minute free kick but, after Seb Quirk was sent off in the 82nd minute, Harrogate equalised from the resulting free kick.

Whalley’s overhead kick rattled the bar and, worryingly for the Reds, McConville was stretchered off in added time.

Then substitute Nolan popped up to rifle home a 30-yard free kick in the eighth minute of added time to give Stanley the win.

Whalley and Rosaire Longelo came into the starting line-up to replace Kelvin Mellor and Jack Nolan.

Goalkeeper Jack McIntyre came onto the bench, recalled from his loan spell at Dartford, with Liam Isherwood injured.

Whalley was in action immediately, feeding McConville whose ball fizzed across the face of goal but Josh Andrews just couldn’t connect.

Stanley came close on 17 minutes when Tommy Leigh got the ball on the edge of the area, made space for himself but fired narrowly wide.

Harrogate looked a threat on the break though, playing a few dangerous balls into the Stanley box.

Jay Rich-Baghuelou wasn’t far off after getting on the end of a McConville corner on 23 minutes while Longelo’s cross found Whalley in the six-yard box but he could only guide his effort over the bar.

McConville opened the scoring on 28 minutes when his 25-yard free kick, after a foul on Whalley, found the top corner of the net for his second goal of the campaign.

Toby Savin kept out Sam Folarin’s fierce shot just after while Andrews headed wide at the other end.

Harrogate came close to an equaliser in added time in the first half but Savin denied former Red loan striker Luke Armstrong from close range.

Town boss Simon Weaver made a triple substitution at the interval and they started the second half on the attack without testing Savin.

Stanley came so close to a second on 66 minutes but keeper Mark Oxley made a quick triple save to deny Whalley twice and Andrews.

Josh Woods and Matt Lowe came on in the 69th minute – it was the first game of the season for Woods and he tested Oxley with a low shot.

Quirk saw red for Stanley after picking up a second yellow card in  the 82nd minute and, from the resulting free kick into the area, Armstrong’s header was turned into the net by Warren Burrell.

This sparked the Reds and, from a McConville corner, Whalley was denied by the woodwork.

McConville was stretchered off in added time after falling awkwardly and replaced by Nolan who celebrated the winner as Stanley are unbeaten at home in the league so far.
