INTERVIEW: Morecambe games are special

Reds boss in hunt for third successive league victory

29 September 2022

John Coleman knows Morecambe games are ‘special’ as Accrington Stanley look for a third successive win.

Derek Adams’ side make the trip to the Wham Stadium on Saturday for what is always a hotly anticipated derby every season when the two sides meet.

The Shrimps have won one league game so far in this campaign – they beat Forest Green Rovers mid-September – and currently sit second from bottom of the table looking to climb the league.

The Reds have jumped up to 13th on the back of six points from their last two games.

Coleman said: “There is a feel good factor after two wins but we are going into a tough derby game. With us winning Saturday and Morecambe losing, people may think we are just going to win and they are the most dangerous games.

“That’s when you have to stay on top of the players until 3pm. In recent years Morecambe have started to improve their results against us and we have to try and find a way to get on top of them and win the game and it won’t be easy.

“The Morecambe game is always a bit special because the fans make it special.

“Everyone knows my affinity with Morecambe, I was delighted when they got promoted and I want to see them flourish, I have got a lot of friends there. I had my most prolific spell in football there.

“They are generally really good games, the fans make it a good atmosphere and Morecambe will travel in numbers.

“Once you have that atmosphere, the game hots up and there has always been plenty of goals in the games. You have got to hope we put them in one end and keep them out at the other.

“Derek has done a marvellous job when he got Morecambe promoted. Once you get to know Derek you see how passionate he is about football. That’s refreshing.

“I love seeing managers who eat, sleep, drink and breath football and he is one of them. He will be doing his best to get one over on us on Saturday, that’s the nature of the game.”

There are no fresh injury concerns with striker Touray Sisay back in training, Rosaire Longelo not far off returning and they have to keep an eye on Kody Adedoyin’s hamstring injury.
