INTERVIEW: Matt off the mark

Striker looking to build on first Stanley goal as Reds take on early pacesetters Ipswich

Matt Lowe celebrated his first Accrington Stanley goal on Tuesday – and is confident more will soon follow.

The striker signed for the Reds from Brackley Town in the summer and has been waiting for his first goal in a Stanley shirt.

It came in the Papa Johns Trophy clash with Rochdale, where he headed home Stanley’s second, and admitted it was a weight off his back.

He has been struggling with a minor injury but now hopes he is back to full fitness to show what he can do.

“It’s been interesting so far,” said the 26-year-old. “It’s been enjoyable but there have been a few challenges I needed to overcome.

“It’s been frustrating trying to get through a niggle but that’s part of football.

“It’s part of adjusting from part-time football to full-time football and there is a difference on the body. It was a small injury I have played through but I have felt I can’t give 100 per cent.

“I have been working closely with the physios and a chiropractor so that’s on its way to getting sorted. Hopefully, I can show what I can do when I am fully fit and ready to go.

“Now I have one goal hopefully others will follow, it usually happens like that. I have waited longer than I would have liked to but I am always positive now I am off the mark they will continue to come. Hopefully I will build on this and have a good season.

“I have played three or four games in the EFL now and I am looking forward to building on Tuesday night, getting a goal and assist which was nice, although we were 2-0 up and comfortable and we should have seen the game out so that’s frustrating.”

Stanley have drawn all their three home League One fixtures so far and their two cup games have ended in stalemates after 90 minutes before going to penalties.

“The most important thing is that it’s an unbeaten start for the team, there are a lot of positives to build on, and hopefully the best is yet to come.

“It is brilliant to be unbeaten but we need to turn the draws into wins and that’s a collective effort where we all pull together.

“In every game, we have come back as a team and fought until the end which shows the group and characters we have got here.”

He knows tomorrow is a big test with one of the early frontrunners Ipswich visiting the Wham Stadium. They added to their squad in striker Gassan Ahadme and midfielder Panutche Camara yesterday.

“It’s a huge game. I was with Marcus Harness at Coventry so it will be nice to see him but, when we are on the pitch, we want to be winning the game.

“We know we are more than capable of competing with these teams and, on our day, match anyone. We have to go into it feeling positive and put on a good display.”
