INTERVIEW: Coley previews Wycombe

Reds aiming to turn positive performances into positive results

12 September 2022

Following the postponement of Saturday's trip to Lincoln City, John Coleman is now fully focused on turning positive performances into positive results at Wycombe Wanderers tomorrow night.

The Reds, who suffered late heartbreak a week ago at Forest Green Rovers, saw Tommy Leigh's 76th-minute equaliser cancelled out by Josh March's winner just five minutes later.

Gareth Ainsworth's side come into the match with five points from their last three league outings, including a 3-0 away victory over Barnsley and draws against both Charlton Athletic and Fleetwood Town.

Here are the highlights from Coley's pre-match interview:

Coley on travelling on the day...

"I don't like staying over on a Monday night and then waiting around all day to play, we'll get the train down tomorrow and hopefully the lads will be fit and raring to go when we get there.

"If we'd have gone today, we'd have trained today, it's a long trip then on the coach and you're at the mercy of the traffic, it could take anything between two and seven hours. Lads when they're away tend to overeat I think because they're bored, sitting around and doing nothing.

"Then they've got a whole day to kill tomorrow before the game, you use a lot of nervous energy in that, so hopefully we'll just go with our minds focused on the game tomorrow and go and try and get a result. It's just something that I think will be beneficial for us."

Coley on the fans...

"It was a disappointing result against Forest Green, there's no getting away from that, and we were disappointed with it.

"We can only thank the fans who travelled because it's an arduous trip on a Tuesday night, and the ones who did make it, we're very, very appreciative of that and it would've been nice to give them something to cheer about.

"We've had some positive results and we've had some positive performances this season. If you look at our players, you can't knock their effort which I think is always a plus for the travelling fans and the home fans, but we've got to turn that effort into a tangible reward which is points."

Coley on Wycombe...

"I know how it feels to lose in the Play-Offs, it's not a good feeling. They've got a good set of lads there, great management in Gareth, longevity personified, and they know that they'll come through that. They've got good players and it's always been a tough place to go, we've generally done okay there though.

"I don't think they'll be getting the credit they deserve, just like I keep banging this drum that our coaches don't get the credit they deserve. People think it's all about gung-ho spirit at Accrington and camaraderie and it's not.

"Jimmy's in there going through minute details with the goalkeepers, and our preparation is thorough and our coaches then deliver it on the training ground as well. Jimmy and John are two excellent English coaches, probably the wrong end of the age scale to be vogue at the moment.

"That doesn't mean they're not good at their job, they're actually very good at their job, excellent at their job, and players who have played for us will appreciate that.

"We can't alter people's perception of us, we've just got to keep doing our job and we don't have to live up to the stereotypes that get labelled to us and Wycombe will be the same."

Coley on tactics...

"We've explored a few options and we'll figure out, as staff and the way we analyse the opposition and our own performances, what we think will be the best team to put out.

"People get het up with formations, at the end of the day it's 11 versus 11 and you'd be hard-pushed to describe England's formation in the 1966 World Cup final.

"It's just about 11 versus 11 and we'll try and put the best 11 out we can."
