INTERVIEW: FA Cup is special says Coley

Reds boss aware of Barnet threat as National League side look to upset odds

It’s Emirates FA Cup second round time – and John Coleman knows National League side Barnet will be out to upset the Reds.

As the non-league side in the past, Stanley enjoyed being the underdog and overcoming the odds and the Bees, who sit sixth in the league, will be coming to the Wham Stadium to knock out the Reds.

There is £67,000 up for grabs for the winners and a place in the coveted third round.

Coleman’s side are looking to make it three wins in a week – after beating Cambridge in League One last Saturday and Grimsby in the Papa Johns Trophy last 32 on Tuesday.

“It would be a fantastic week to win all three but it’s a big ask on Saturday,” said Coleman.

“It’s a game that both teams will earmark as a chance to one progress but two try and buy a ticket to create a lot of money for their clubs so there is added pressure on the game.

“But when the game kicks off, it’s about trying to win a game of football and that’s not down to money, it’s down to heart, spirit, skill, concentration, determination, loads of different factors, and you have to come out on top.

“The non-league teams tend to over perform in the FA Cup, as compared to the league, they find unexpected resources and dig into depths to find a way to get results.

“That’s what makes it so wonderful - non-league teams beating league teams and you only have to go back to when we were doing it.

“That’s why I never take any game for granted, no matter what the level is, whether playing up or down. I don’t write our chances off and I don’t take anything for granted the other way.

“The minute you start doing that you are setting yourself up for a fall. We will have to be at our best.”

Coleman watched Barnet beat Chelmsford in the first round replay and said: “They are a decent side, they have got good players, players who are coveted by league clubs and they will give anyone a game.

“I have got a good friend in Mark Carter who played for Barnet and my son-in-law and his dad are Barnet fans so it’s got a nice little connection for us.

“And the FA Cup is always special. It special to me, as a player, it’s the reason why we are here, the pitch is what it is, the stadium is as it is, the reason we are in League One is because of an FA Cup run. We went full time and had the money to do it.”

Coleman is hoping Joe Pritchard and Ryan Astley are closer to fitness although Doug Tharme may be cup-tied.
