Reds record clean sheet in penultimate pre-season friendly

19 July 2022

Accrington Stanley put on a strong defensive show against Championship side Wigan Athletic in a goalless encounter.

In the Reds penultimate pre-season friendly, the Reds chalked up a welcome clean sheet against the newly-promoted side, managed by former Stanley defender and manager Leam Richardson.

Boss John Coleman is building up to the League One opener at home to Charlton a week on Saturday, with Sunderland the final visitors to the Wham Stadium on Saturday.

Coleman switched around his squad, giving players who hadn’t played as much on Saturday in the 1-0 loss to Preston the nod, with only Mo Sangare starting both games.

The Reds began well, Tommy Leigh making a strong run into the box and crossing the ball early on while Latics keeper Jamie Jones collected Harry Perritt’s strike.

Wigan came the close on seven minutes when Jack Whatmough had a header cleared off the line.

James McClean had a low free kick saved by Toby Savin and Whatmough, at the far post, hit the underside of the crossbar almost on the goalline from McClean’s ball in before it was cleared.

McClean’s long range strike was one-handedly pushed away by Savin while, at the other end, Kody Adedoyin’s low shot was blocked by Curtis Tilt.

Near the end of the half, Wigan’s Will Keane weaved his way into the area but fired wide of the goal.

After the break, Max Power volleyed wide for the Championship side and Coleman made a number of changes just before the hour mark.

Wigan also made a host of substitutions and Stanley enjoyed a period of pressure, with the best chance Harvey Rodgers heading straight into the arms of keeper Ben Amos on 68 minutes.

Jason Kerr headed over the bar for the Latics while Charlie Hughes headed off-target with five minutes to go.

Sean McConville’s curling corner was straight to Amos as neither side could break the deadlock.
