McConville's early double seals win for Reds over Championship side

13 July 2022

Sean McConville celebrated his new contract with an early double to record a win over Championship side Stoke City in a pre-season friendly at the Wham Stadium.

Colby Bishop returned from a niggle to start his first pre-season game and Joe Pritchard was involved early on, his shot tipped away by keeper Jack Bonham.

Stanley opened the scoring in the ninth minute when McConville, who signed a contract extension until 2024 this week, rifled a shot into the top of the net.

Winger McConville, who said he wanted to score more goals this season, made it two a minute later, sliding in at the far post to put the ball past Bonham from close range.

Stoke came more into it and Lewis Baker had two chances but couldn’t find the target while, just before half-time, Josh Tymon rifled the ball over the bar.

John Coleman made a number of changes at half-time as did his Stoke counterpart Michael O’Neill and there were further changes in the half as all the squad got a run out.

Kody Adedoyin had a shot well saved by Bonham as the Reds looked to extend their lead while a hooked shot from Josh Woods sailed wide.

Stanley: Jensen (Savin), Clark (Procter), Rich-Baghuelou (Woods), Rodgers, Astley (Martin), Coyle (Conneely), Hamilton (Pell), Pritchard (Sangare), Whalley (Longelo), McConville (Lowe), Bishop (Adedoyin)

Attendance: 1098 (624 away)
