Adedoyin's 96th minute goal rescues a point for the Reds

30 July 2022

Kody Adedoyin struck in the 96th minute to rescue a deserved point for the Reds in a 2-2 draw with Charlton Athletic.

The Addicks took the lead in the first half through Scott Fraser but they had keeper Jojo Wollacott to thank for keeping Stanley out.

After the break, the Reds created numerous chances and it was Sean McConville who found a way through on 68 minutes.

In six minutes of injury-time, Miles Leaburn headed home what looked like the winner for the Addicks before Adedoyin struck in dramatic fashion the 96th minute.

The opening exchanges were lively with both sides playing dangerous balls into the box but both defences stood firm.

Summer signing Matt Lowe came close for Stanley on 14 minutes when he headed down and just over the bar from a Sean McConville free kick while, from another McConville free kick, keeper Wollacott had to touch it over.

Sean Whalley’s 20 yard strike was pushed away by the Charlton stopper while McConville’s fierce goalbound shot was blocked.

Charlton struck on 36 minutes with a quick breakaway through Albie Morgan on the right. He passed to Diallang Jaiyesimi whose ball in found Fraser and he slotted home the opening goal.

Charlton looked for a second with Morgan blasting narrowly over while, in injury time, Ethan Hamilton’s drilled effort was saved by Wollacott as Stanley looked to get back on level terms.

After the break, Stanley pressed. Joe Pritchard twisted and turned into a good position but his strike was across the goal and narrowly wide.

Liam Coyle came close to finding the target with a header and, after the Reds pounced on a defensive mistake, Lowe just couldn’t find a way past Wollacott from six yards out.

At the other end, former Red loanee Jayden Stockley had a free header but couldn’t connect properly.

Stanley continued to be the more dominant side and a McConville long range curling strike needed turning around the post by Wollacott and Whalley, charging in at the far post, was kept out with the legs of the Addicks keeper.

Stanley got the equaliser their pressure deserved on 69 minutes when Whalley tricked his way into box, his ball in evaded Lowe, who felt he was pushed, but came out to McConville at back post and he blasted the ball home.

It was Lowe’s last action as he came off injured, replaced by striker Adedoyin.

Both sides made changes as they looked for the winner and it looked like Charlton had sealed it with teenager Leaburn's 94th minute header.

But never write Stanley off and Adedoyin got on the end of Mitch Clark's ball in to score from close range and secure a point and get the Reds off the mark in the 2022/23 campaign.
