REPORT: Crystal Palace 1-1 Stanley

Matt Lowe scores his first goal in a Stanley shirt just four minutes after coming off the bench

2 July 2022

Matt Lowe grabbed his first goal in an Accrington Stanley shirt as John Coleman's side began their 2022/23 pre-season campaign with a 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace.

The half-time substitute, who joined the Reds from Brackley Town in June, controlled the ball well before superbly firing it into the far corner; cancelling out Jean-Philippe Mateta's 22nd-minute finish.

Patrick Vieira's men began the behind-closed-doors friendly on the front foot, with defender James Tomkins and winger Jesrun Rak-Sakyi both failing to hit the target inside the opening quarter of an hour.

Stanley's first attempt on goal came via Tommy Leigh, but the midfielder's 14th-minute effort was stopped well by Palace's Vicente Guaita.

The Premier League side broke the deadlock eight minutes later, with Odsonne Edouard feeding the ball through to Mateta and the striker slotted it calmly past Toby Savin.

Following a good driving run to get to the byline, full-back Mitch Clark then fired a shot over the crossbar just after the half-hour mark.

The Eagles continued to create chances and Mateta should have scored his second on 36 minutes, but he could only head wide from an Eberechi Eze corner.

Savin then produced two wonderful saves to keep the scoreline at 1-0, denying both Rak-Sakyi and Eze.

Coleman made five changes at half-time, with substitute Lowe levelling four minutes after the break.

The Reds then had a great opportunity to take the lead, but Archie Procter's header crashed against the woodwork.

Goalkeeper Lukas Jensen was called into action with five minutes to go, as the Burnley loanee made a good stop to prevent James McArthur's long-range effort from finding the back of the net.

Next up for Coleman's side is a local derby at home to Blackburn Rovers on Saturday 9th July, the first of five pre-season friendlies at the Wham Stadium in 15 days.
