INTERVIEW: McConville 'loves this club'

Stanley midfielder Sean McConville discusses his new contract with the Reds

11 July 2022

Sean McConville is looking to build on his 17 assists and four goals from last season after signing a contract extension until 2024.

Winger McConville is the Reds record appearance holder in the EFL with 388 appearances in his two spells at the club from 2009-11 and re-signing in 2015.

The 33-year-old said: “I am delighted to sign a new deal. I want to thank the manager for putting his faith in me and the chairman for putting the deal together and getting me here for another two years minimum. I am happy to be here.

“At times, when I first came back in 2015, understandably the fans were umming and ahing but I would like to think I have won the majority of them over through more effort and determination than they think.

“Then add a little bit of quality which you think you have got on top of that and I have been fortunate to score and been a part of the club’s progression over the last seven years.

“I will keep working hard and basing myself on running stats. If I ever see those on the decline then I will start to worry but this pre-season I have felt fitter than any other season.

“I felt I have come back in really good shape and, in the two games I have played so far, I have done quite well. I am looking forward to getting the rest of pre-season out of the way and starting against Charlton in what will be another rigorous campaign but hopefully we can kick on and progress from the 12th place we finished last season.”

McConville admitted that working with John Coleman, Jimmy Bell and John Doolan was a big decision behind extending his contract.

“I know the management team inside out, how they work and operate and me and Seamus (Conneely) being here helps them manage things.

“They like to do things on the grass and on the pitch and they like the more senior players to manage things in the dressing room and make sure that’s ok.

“It’s a big responsibility from senior players to police that and the gaffer puts his trust in me for that and, more importantly, he puts his trust in me on the pitch.

“You have to continually perform for him and I am like any other player, if I  don’t perform I won’t play but I feel good, I feel fit, I am in good shape and I hopefully I am looking forward to another season where my numbers and stats are quite high.

“Probably the only thing I would like to add to my game is a couple more goals that I got last year.

“I know you are always going to get a younger, upcoming lads that are going to try and dislodge you but I prefer that, I prefer having competition. I relish it, I relish a challenge and the chance to show I am better than you.

“The biggest thing is I love playing for the club, I love everything about it, I love coming in every morning and I have got a relationship with most of the fans. I would love to end my career here.”
