INTERVIEW: Toby on social media, making saves and his ambitions

Goalkeeper can't wait for Pompey visit

22 October 2021

Toby Savin admits he doesn’t take notice of good or bad reviews – he just keeps doing his job.

The goalkeeper is relishing the visit of Portsmouth to the Wham Stadium tomorrow as he bids to keep hold of the No. 1 spot, ahead of James Trafford.

The 20-year-old pulled off a stunning save in the last few minutes at Charlton on Tuesday to make sure the Reds took an important three points to move them into 10th place in the table.

But he knows the goals conceded column is a worry for the Reds.

“When you are conceding goals everyone looks at goalkeeper position but it’s part of the job, you take it on the chin and try and not let it affect us.

“I am on social media but I don't take too much notice whether I have good or bad games. If I do have a bad game, I switch off it, I don’t go near it and so I don’t find it too damaging.

“Tomorrow is a big game for us. We always do well against the so-called big teams,  especially when they come here, and it’s just exciting. I can’t wait.”

Savin is ambitious and that matches the ambition of the whole club.

“We have ambitions to get higher, we are just off the play-offs, we missed out last season, so it’s an incentive we can do it this season.

“It’s about getting a run together, we have struggled to get momentum going this season but hopefully with the win on Tuesday we can go on tomorrow and start doing that.

“We have definitely got a good enough team for Championship, we have quality players and there is no point being in this league if you are not looking up.”

He admits the goalkeeping group is a good one.

“There is always a friendship with every keeper that has been. There was Nathan (Baxter) last year and Joe (Bursik) the year before. It’s all healthy competition, all positive and we learn off each other. “

And he says John Coleman definitely keeps everything upbeat!

“The gaffer is great at man-management, he knows how to deal with each individual player, he has the respect from the players. He is positive, he is always in a good mood and always coming in singing. You always hear him before you see him!"
