REPORT: Port Vale 5 Stanley 1

Colby Bishop sent off as Reds exit the Emirates FA Cup

6 November 2021

Ten-man Accrington Stanley exited the Emirates FA Cup at the first round stage as James Wilson scored a hat-trick for Port Vale.

Vale are chasing promotion in League Two and were 1-0 up before Colby Bishop saw red in the 71st minute for an off-the-ball incident after referee Benjamin Speedie consulted with his assistant.

Wilson then struck twice before Ethan Hamilton got one back for the Reds on 85 minutes.

Lewis Cass replied immediately and George Lloyd completed the scoring for Vale in injury time.

Stanley were without Sean McConville with Jack Nolan coming into the side and they started well.

An early header from Bishop was over the bar while Hamilton ballooned the ball over in a good position on 10 minutes.

Harry Pell blasted across the face of goal and wide while Bishop’s header was straight at keeper Lucas Covolan as Stanley created the better chances in the early stages.

Vale opened the scoring with their first shot on target on 30 minutes when Wilson tricked his way around the Stanley defence, into the area and fired low into the far corner of the net.

Vale broke with pace but Stanley cleared while, at the other end, Pell raced free but had the ball taken from his foot as he lined up to shoot.

The Valiants were then the more threatening up to half-time with a couple of efforts off-target and David Amoo’s strike was straight at Toby Savin.

Stanley did end the half with a thumping header from Pell wide of the goal while Covolan saved from Hamilton as the whistle blew.

Port Vale started the second half strongly with their best chance, Wilson firing wide.

Coleman made a substitution on 54 minutes, striker Lewis Mansell on for midfielder David Morgan.

Savin denied James Gibbons and then Wilson had a header cleared off the line as Port Vale continued to press.

Gibbons tricked his way into the area and volleyed goalwards but Ross Sykes blocked the effort.

It got worse for Stanley on 70 minutes when Bishop was red-carded.

Ben Garrity came close just after, with Savin making a tremendous save, and then Port Vale got the second on 74 minutes.

It was Wilson again with the Reds unable to clear a corner, the striker got the ball and rifled it across the goal and low into the net.

The ten-men pressed but it needed Savin again to one-handedly push away Tom Conlon’s close range effort.

Coleman made a double substitution but within seconds, Port Vale were 3-0 up as Wilson celebrated a hat-trick.

Conlon whipped a ball across the goal with Wilson charging in and flicking it past Savin on 79 minutes.

Hamilton got one back for Stanley after Nolan set him up on 85 minutes but it was straight down the other end and the Valiants made it four.

In the same minute, from the kick off, the ball came to Cass in the area and he blasted it home via the underside of the crossbar.

Savin saved Lloyd's initial effort in injury time but the substitute fired home the rebound.
