INTERVIEW: Tommy talks about first EFL goal

Landmark week for 21-year-old - now he wants to kick on

18 November 2021

Tommy Leigh admits it has been a landmark week for him after making his first EFL start and scoring his first league goal.

The midfielder has three goals for the season, scoring two in the last week after netting at Fleetwood in the Papa John’s Trophy and then scoring in the 4-1 League One loss to Plymouth last weekend.

The 21-year-old admitted it was a bitter-sweet moment due to Stanley losing the game but he hopes he can keep getting on the scoresheet and hopefully helping the Reds to wins, starting with Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

“It was amazing to score,” said Tommy, who was signed from non-league Bognor Regis Town in the summer.

“As soon as the ball hit the back of the net, I was buzzing but the result didn’t go our way. We had more shots than them and I thought we played well but we didn’t put them away.

“It was brilliant for me and Liam (Coyle) to start against Plymouth, we have both come from the 23s up to the first team and hopefully we can both kick on.

“With players from similar backgrounds, you talk to them about their life, we have both taken a massive step and we have earned it and we both want to carry on and stay in the first team

“Hopefully I can stay in the team, score more goals and help the team out.”

It will be a bumper crowd at the Wham, with Wednesday having sold their 2,600 allocation.

“Yes it’s a massive difference in a couple of seasons for me. Last season, I was playing in front of 600 and now it’s a lot more than that.

“I must admit, I don’t tend to notice the crowd once I am on the pitch, I am too busy concentrating on the game, unless you score a goal and then you are buzzing!

“I want to be the best player on the pitch so the full focus is on myself.

“I am competitive, the whole group is competitive at everything and we all want to be the best!”
