SIGNING: Smyth rejoins on loan

The Reds have completed the loan signing of striker Paul Smyth from Queens Park Rangers

28 January 2021

Accrington Stanley have today completed the loan signing of striker Paul Smyth from Queens Park Rangers until the end of the season.

The Northern Irishman will return to the Wham Stadium having previously spent the latter half of the 2018/19 campaign on loan with the Reds.

During his first spell with the club, Smyth contributed to eight goals including strikes against Sunderland, Wycombe Wanderers and Doncaster Rovers.

The 23-year-old had a loan spell with Wycombe Wanderers last season, with The Chairboys going onto secure promotion to the Sky Bet Championship via the Play-Offs.

Smyth has spent the last four months on loan at Charlton Athletic, scoring one goal and providing two assists for The Addicks during that time.

After signing the Belfast-born striker for a second time, manager John Coleman said: "We know what we're getting with Paul, I think he's developed as a player over the last couple of years and he certainly impressed when he played against us for Charlton.

"He gives us that other dimension with pace so he ticks a lot of boxes, and I'm hoping he plays a lot of games and does well for us."

Following his promotion with Wycombe, the 23-year-old explained that he can see parallels with this current Stanley team.

"Accrington are a good team and everyone knows that now, and they're showing it out on the pitch.

"It would be a nice target, I got promoted with Wycombe and it was brilliant so I've had that feeling and the desire and drive.

"To do it with Accrington would be brilliant, you've got to have the hope and desire to drive and push yourself to the best that you can.

"That's what Accrington are doing this season, they still have 26 games so there's a lot of games left to get three points."

Paul's first interview video will be uploaded to the club's official YouTube channel later today, CLICK HERE to find out more!

Smyth is eligible for Saturday's squad to face Plymouth Argyle, with the striker set to wear the number 7 shirt during his time at the club.
