SIGNING: Phillips arrives on loan

Reds sign Adam Phillips on loan from Burnley until the end of the season

1 February 2021

Accrington Stanley have today completed the loan signing of midfielder Adam Phillips from Burnley until the end of the season.

Phillips has spent the first five months of the season on loan at Morecambe, with the 23-year-old having scored 10 goals and provided seven assists during that time.

The midfielder came through the youth system at Liverpool, before signing a two-year contract with Norwich City in July 2017.

Phillips spent two years with The Canaries prior to departing Norfolk to sign a one-year contract with Burnley.

Having joined Morecambe on loan in January 2020, the midfielder returned to the Mazuma Stadium for a second loan spell in August.

Manager John Coleman said: "He's a good player, he's done well in his loan spell for Morecambe and hopefully he'll kick on for us.

"We are lacking goals from central midfield and he has an eye for goal, he gives us an attacking option from midfield as well as Sean McConville, Matt Butcher and Jon Russell.

"I don't think we've had as many goals from midfield that I'd like, we've only had five or six and I'm looking for us to score more."

After joining the Reds on loan until the end of the season, Phillips said: "It’s a late one but I am delighted to be here, it’s a great opportunity for me and I can’t wait to meet all the lads and can’t wait to get going.

“I am from Garstang, near Preston, I had a spell at Blackburn when I was younger, then Liverpool, Norwich and I am now at Burnley with a loan move here and I am ready to go.

“I have travelled, been to different clubs as a young player, you have got to learn where you fit in, I found it hard when I was younger as I moved away from home. I have had a load of challenges but I have come through them.

“I enjoyed my time at Morecambe, it’s been a great season for me so far. I have scored goals and played lots of minutes and that’s what I wanted to do.

“The manager there has given me a lot of praise and I am looking forward to carrying on playing well.

"This is a step up and I am looking forward to it, to playing in this league and the challenge ahead.”

Phillips has been pleased with his goal return so far in his first experience of EFL football.

“I like to get in the box, get on end of crosses and I like to get back and help the team out. I always give 100 per cent and I like to take risks with passing.

“I have been looking at Accrington’s results and how they have been getting on and I am glad it’s done.

“Accrington have a few games in hand, so hopefully we can get into Play-Offs and get a good end to the season.”

Phillips is not eligible for tomorrow night's game against Bristol Rovers as the move is subject to Premier League, EFL and FA ratification.
