After grabbing the winning goal on his first start for the club, Accrington Stanley midfielder Jon Russell discusses the 2-1 win over Rochdale.

The 20-year-old, who celebrated his birthday yesterday, admitted securing the club's first win over Rochdale in seven years has topped off a brilliant first week for him since joining on loan from Chelsea.

"I'm over the moon with the team performance and me getting the goal, it was my birthday the other day so it's just a great weekend really.

"It's been a top week, the lads are very welcoming and I've had fun.

"They're nice guys and I get along with the manager, so I'm very happy to be here."

With the game goalless at the break, the midfielder explained that he was happy with the way he improved and adapted to the game during the second half.

"My performance in the first half wasn't great, but I adapted and made sure my performance after the break was much better.

"The goal is an added bonus and we've made history by beating Rochdale today, we're all very happy with what we've achieved today."

After drawing the Reds level earlier in the game, Joe Pritchard was also the creator for Russell's goal and the Chelsea loanee was full of praise for the winger.

"I know Joe's got the ability to take players on in a one-on-one situation, so I need to make sure that I'm getting into the box.

"I got into a good position and thankfully it's hit the back of the net.

"I'm a box-to-box player and I love to get goals as well for the team."

With Stanley coming from behind against AFC Wimbledon and also in today's game, Russell said that the confidence within the team is now at a very high level.

"It's about having faith to win every game, we don't worry if we concede first but we've got to keep pushing and we've got the ability to beat any team in this league.

"We've got the confidence now ahead of next weekend's away trip, and we know we can win every game."

Nathan Baxter's arrival yesterday took the number of Chelsea players on loan at the club to three, and Russell admitted that it's always easier when you know other people straightaway.

"It's good to have two other players at the club that you know as it makes it more comfortable from the start.

"In football you get loans all over the place, so you've got to fully focus on yourself and the team in order to try and win every game."
