Pre-book your PSA test with Stanley

Barry Kilby Prostate Cancer Appeal to subsidise a proportion of the cost of a PSA test

24 January 2020

Don't forget that Accrington Stanley will be hosting a PSA testing day on Saturday 8th February in the Redz Bar at the Wham Stadium.

The testing day will be ran by the Barry Kilby Prostate Cancer Appeal (BKPCA) and to pre-book your test, CLICK HERE!

Following his own diagnosis in 2015, Barry Kilby launched the BKPCA to provide opportunities for men to be tested for prostate cancer, a disease which affects one in eight men in the United Kingdom.

Quite often men experience few if any symptoms and currently there isn't a national screening programme, with Kilby's own diagnosis coming about by chance.

Kilby, who is vice-chair of Burnley FC, said: "As a rule men don't go to the doctors as they should, however they will go down to their local football club."

So working on this assumption, the BKPCA began inviting men to come along to their football club and have a simple PSA blood test which can offer an early warning that the disease might be present.

By putting the test into a football environment, a place where traditionally men come together, and with the publicity that a football club can generate, the response has been amazing.

Although launched at Burnley's Turf Moor, Stanley are keen for their fans and the wider community to benefit from this initiative.

To date, some 4,500 men have been tested with at least 400 lives saved by this approach.

Stanley's PSA testing day will welcome all men aged 50 and over, or 45 and over with a family history of the illness to attend.

The cost of the test is a £5 to £10 donation as the remainder of the cost is subsidised by the BKPCA, with a PSA test costing £25 in full.

This approach saves lives, so come along and get tested!
