Maguire: We obviously want to get up there

15 July 2019

Accrington Stanley defender Joe Maguire is hoping the club can challenge at the top end of the table after joining Stanley this afternoon on a free transfer.

The 23-year-old, who has been on trial with the club, spoke of how happy he is to have signed for Stanley and that he has already been made to feel very welcome by the rest of the squad and management staff.

"I'm delighted, I've been here for a week already and I've really enjoyed the set-up, obviously all the staff and all the players have welcomed me very kindly, so I'm just looking forward to getting started now."

During his trial with the club, Maguire featured in both the friendly against Sligo Rovers and the 2-1 victory over Olympique de Marseille, in which he made an exceptional goalline headed clearance.

"It was an ideal game to come into, obviously I played the Sligo game as well which was my first game.

"Then coming into the Marseille game, obviously against players like (Dimitri) Payet, Kevin (Strootman), I'm delighted to be against teams like that.

"That's what we want to build towards, that's what the club's ambitions are and hopefully we can play against teams of that calibre every week., that's the aim."

When asked about the ambitions of the team for the upcoming season, Maguire was confident in saying that the goal for the squad is to be challenging at the top end of the Sky Bet League One table.

"We want to get up the leagues, we obviously want to get up there and our aim is now to get promotion and push ourselves to the limit."
