Ben signs for Stanley

16 July 2019

Accrington Stanley have today signed their third defender in just four days with the arrival of Ben Barclay on a free transfer.

The 22-year-old, who joins from Brighton & Hove Albion, has signed a one-year contract with the option of a further year ahead of the 2019/20 Sky Bet League One season.

Stanley have brought in two full-backs in Zaine Francis-Angol and Joe Maguire, with centre-back Barclay becoming the third defender to sign for the club in just four days.

The former Brighton defender began his footballing career with Manchester City before moving down to the south coast in 2013.

Barclay made his only senior appearance for The Seagulls in their EFL Cup defeat to Southampton in August 2018, before joining Notts County five months later on loan until the end of the season.

During his time with the Sky Bet League Two club, the defender made 13 appearances and grabbed his first ever professional goal in a 2-1 defeat to Milton Keynes Dons.

Stanley manager John Coleman said: "He is a promising defender from Brighton, he came through at Manchester City so he is technically a very good footballer.

"He had an opportunity last season in League Two with Notts County and it's a chance for him to kick on in League One and get more league experience under his belt."

Barclay is Stanley's sixth signing of the summer transfer window.
