Liverpool U18 4 Stanley U18 0

21 January 2019

Stanley's youth team exited the FA Youth Cup against Premier League Liverpool - but had their chances.

The U18s beat Tranmere, Notts County and Leeds to face Liverpool at St Helen's Rugby Club in the Fourth Round tonight.

However the Premier League side made their chances count, especially skipper Paul Glatzel who was clinical as he celebrated a hat-trick.

Stanley meanwhile missed a number of good opportunities, their first in the opening moments when Charlie Ridge blazed over the bar from close range.

At the other end, keeper Toby Savin denied Abdi Sharif while Elijah Dixon-Bonner fired over for the Premier League U18 side in the early stages.

Liverpool enjoyed plenty of possession and the pressure told when Rhys Williams headed home the opener from a Leighton Clarkson cross to give the hosts the early advantage.

Liverpool then took control with Dixon-Bonner firing wide from distance.

However Stanley could have got back on level terms with winger Lewis Gilboy racing one-on-one with keeper Vitezslav Jaros but the stopper denied him.

Savin dealt with a Glatzel strike while Dan Martin made a superb last ditch tackle to stop another Liverpool chance.

However they made it two before the break when Yasser Larouci's cross found skipper Glatzel who headed home.

Stanley started the second half brightly and Ridge had a half chance which was straight at the keeper.

Liverpool came close to a third but Savin kept out Bobby Duncan's point blank header.

Stanley had another great chance to get one back but winger Gilboy headed over Ridge's cross while, at the other end, Duncan fired over when through.

Glatzel made the game safe, beating Savin and slotting home after a passing move to make it 3-0.

The young Reds kept pressing but Gilboy shot straight at Jaros while Glatzel was clinical - celebrating his hat-trick late on - and they will face Wigan in Round Five.
