Dimi surprise at debut

20 January 2019

New signing Dimitar Evtimov admitted he didn't expect to make his Accrington Stanley debut at Charlton yesterday - and was gutted with the late controversial defeat.

The Bulgarian stopper only signed for the Reds on Friday and was on the bench for the match at The Valley.

However No. 1 Jonny Maxted saw red, along with Charlton's Lyle Taylor, on 80 minutes leaving Evtimov to come on.

And he was frustrated that Karlan Grant slotted home a contentious penalty in the 93rd minute - given for handball by Dan Barlaser.

“I did not expect to make my debut in circumstances like this, I am not going to lie, I didn't expect that," said the 25-year-old.

"I think it was harsh on Jonny to get sent off, I don't think he deserved that. He played really well up to then.

"I had to come on, do my best and unfortunately I couldn't save the penalty.

"I dived the right way, I had a feeling it was going to go there, but it was a good penalty, right in the corner, and I couldn't really do anything about it.

"We are disappointed with the result as we didn't deserve to lose, I think the draw would have been a fair result.

"Everybody is down in the dumps, no one thought we were going to lose this game as we were solid at the back and 0-0 was a pretty fair result."

The Charlton game aside, former Nottingham Forest and Burton Albion stopper Evtimov is excited about being at the Wham Stadium.

“I had an offer from another team but I spoke to the manager here and I thought it's the right place for me to carry on my career.

“The boys have all been great, I am pleased with the boys and the gaffer.

“The boys are passionate, the minute they met me and introduced themselves you could see that they are so passionate to help this club keep going in a positive way."
