Difficult week for Coleman

7 February 2019

John Coleman admits that the past week has been a frustrating one when it comes to match preparation.

Stanley saw last weekend's home game against Blackpool postponed because of a frozen pitch, and the wet and wintry conditions have hampered the boss' planning ahead of the trip to Scunthorpe on Saturday.

The Reds were however able to hone their match fitness in a behind-closed-doors game at Southport during the week, with every member of the squad involved.

"It's been very difficult to be honest," said Coleman. "We were fortunate that Southport very kindly agreed to let us play a bounce game at their home ground, which was good.

"We got 45 minutes into everybody in the squad which was good, and it's given us a few ideas for the weekend.

"A lot of clubs don't necessarily struggle as much as we do because they have their own training ground, and that's something that is very high on our list of priorities for what we want to achieve here, and what we want to develop going forward.

"I know Andy Holt, and I know that when we do get the training ground it will be as good as it can be, there won't be any corners cut. We're probably better off waiting for a good one than making do with a bad one."

Despite the issues, the Stanley boss is pleased with what he has seen from his squad so far, including his latest additions.

The Reds welcomed several new additions to the squad last month, with permanent deals for goalkeeper Dimitar Evtimov and forward Okera Simmonds as well as bringing in Liam Gibson, Luke Armstrong, Paul Smyth and Janoi Donacien on loan.

Coleman said: "I'm happier with the squad [after January] because you're always trying to improve it, but I'm never fully happy. I've already got one eye on next season and what things I want to do next season.

"I think you've always got to try and be progressive and try to improve, and try to learn really.

"I want to try and assemble a squad that can compete for the top two places of this league."
