Stanley's manager discusses the Carabao Cup defeat to Sunderland

14 August 2019

Accrington Stanley manager John Coleman admitted that his side put in a better performance in the 3-1 defeat to Sunderland, but that they will need to improve again ahead of Saturday’s trip to London to face AFC Wimbledon.

Goals from Marc McNulty, Aiden McGeady and Charlie Wyke were enough to secure the victory for The Black Cats, but Stanley’s manager highlighted that both sides were fairly equal for the majority of the game.

“We were better than we were against Lincoln, and there wasn’t much in the game.

“I think we matched Sunderland in every department except finishing.

“They were more clinical than us, and that’s a harsh lesson that I’ve got to learn from.”

Summer signing Colby Bishop grabbed his first competitive goal for the club in the defeat, and Coleman hopes that the partnership between Bishop and fellow new signing Courtney Baker-Richardson will begin to blossom the more games they play together.

“It can only get better, Colby (Bishop) missed a good chance in the first half, and maybe could have had a penalty in the second half.

“I think his overall play was good.”
