Cheer us over the line: Coley

25 April 2019

John Coleman hopes the fans will be able to celebrate as Stanley look to get the point to push them over the line against Plymouth Argyle on Saturday.

It's the final home game of the season with the Pilgrims needing a win to boost their own chances of survival in League One.

The Reds boss is hoping for a packed Wham Stadium to cheer Stanley on and hopefully celebrate League One football next season.

“If we win, it will be a celebration and it will be a relief,” said Coleman.

“If you take the lowest budgets in the league then us and Wycombe should toss a coin for 23rd and 24th place.

“But it's not about money, it's about pride, it's how you assemble a team and what's inside the players not what you pay them.

“The higher up the league you go, there is a more direct correlation between money and success – Sunderland are up there with all their assets and the big hitters last season were Blackburn and Wigan.

“Shrewsbury and Burton are proof you can push on even without a big budget but it will probably get less so, the fairy-tales will be few and far between.

“We do set high targets but sometimes you also need a reality check, myself included, and, if we do stay up, we can learn a lot from this season.”

He knows it will be a battle against Plymouth, with the Reds in 14th place, five points above the bottom four, and the Pilgrims in 20th spot, one point from the relegation places.

“Plymouth are a massive club, they have always been a good side who play good football. I respect the way Derek Adams sets his teams up and, like anyone in this league, they can beat anyone on their day.

“We know it's not job done for us, some people are saying it's done and dusted but it's not. We don't want to lose on Saturday and go into the Portsmouth game needing something or relying on other results. We have got a lot of work to do on Saturday.”

Scott Brown (back) and Callum Johnson (ankle) are doubts while keeper Dimi Evtimov is suspended.
