Dan Barlaser admitted his first Emirates FA Cup goal was an emotional moment as he dedicated it to his grandad who died this week.
The Newcastle loan midfielder said his grandad, John Robson, 83, was his golf partner and his biggest football critic.
Barlaser fired home the winner in the 34th minute, his strike taking a deflection on its way into the bottom of the net.“I am very pleased to score because my grandad died this week so it meant a lot,” said the 21-year-old.
“I told the lads I was going to score for him, and my mum and dad as well, so it's nice. My mum and dad were here and it's fate really.
“When I got the ball on the edge of the box, I just had a shot. It's still going in the corner, it's on target so I am taking it.”
Barlaser admitted the Reds were under threat in the opening 20 minutes but grew into the game as it wore on.
“We lost the ball, me included which they nearly scored from, and it was just sloppy really.
“But after the first 20 minutes, I felt we ran the game and once we got the goal, I knew we were going to win, I just didn't know by how many.
“We had chances, especially in the second half, we just didn't finish them off.
“I made my Newcastle debut in the FA Cup against Birmingham and this was my first FA Cup goal.”
The draw for the Second Round is Monday night at 7pm.
“I wouldn't mind Sunderland,” said Barlaser. “We will take on anyone at home though. The style of football we play and how we press teams, we can take anyone on. We will have a right go!”
