Stanley will surprise teams: Kee

22 May 2018

Billy Kee is relishing the challenge of playing in League One with Accrington Stanley next season and thinks the Reds will surprise a few people.

The 27-year-old bagged 26 goals in a historic campaign that helped John Coleman's side win promotion as champions, and saw the striker receive a number of individual accolades - including the League Two Player of the Year award.

Kee is immensely proud of the team's achievements and is already using the memories as he prepares himself for the next test.

“It's been nice to look back on the season and what a great year we all had,” said Kee. “It was fantastic but it's all about getting onto next season now.

“We've got to aim for the next achievement which will be to stay in League One, or maybe even challenge for promotion there - that would be unbelievable.

“I think we can do it. The gaffer talks about the core a lot, and we've got five or six lads who have played together for a few years now, and with John and Jimmy adding to the squad I think we will be fine.

“If we can get things right I think we can challenge and be a surprise package this year.”

Kee has played in the third tier before, during his time at Scunthorpe United, and is excited by the prospect of playing former club Burton Albion following their relegation from the Championship on the final day of the season.

The Reds' frontman doesn't set himself many targets going into a new campaign, but League Two's Golden Boot winner is already thinking ahead.

“Everybody knows that I'll enjoy going back to Burton,” said Kee. “I've got a point to prove at Scunthorpe too, so there's two games that I'll be looking forward to.

“People keep talking about big clubs, like Sunderland, and to have the chance of going to teams like that and hopefully upsetting them, and doing that on a regular basis, is going to be really good.

“My targets are always the same. I'd like to get to 20 goals, and I hit that last year. I'd like to try and start every game again like I did last year too. I'll get myself fit over the summer, get myself a little bit sharper and go from there.”
